Finishes & coatings
Finishing is what the hand notices first.
Finishing is what the hand and the eye register before the artwork: the surface of the board, a metallic mark, a raised logo, a window onto the product. Lamination is included on every order; foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV, specialty papers and window patching are added where the design calls for them. Here is what each does.

How to choose
How to combine finishes.
Set the surface first
Lamination is the base every other finish sits on, so choose it for the product and the handling. Matte and soft-touch give a low-glare ground that makes foil and spot UV read strongly; gloss saturates color and suits bright artwork on its own.
One finish on the mark, not three
The most confident packaging carries a single accent finish where the brand sits: foil on the logo, a blind deboss of the name, spot UV on a pattern. Stacking several on one panel competes for attention. Two can be combined in register as a foiled emboss.
Match the finish to the board
Coated SBS takes every finish cleanly. Kraft takes foil and deboss well and is often left uncoated. Rigid box wraps and thicker stocks take a deeper emboss than thin board. Specialty papers are a finish in themselves and usually carry only foil or a deboss on top.
Specify it on the dieline
Foil, emboss, deboss, spot UV and window shapes are each supplied as a separate vector layer on the dieline, as solid shapes rather than hairline type. The proof shows every layer in position, and the pre-production sample on qualifying orders shows the finish on the board.
In detail
Finishes, one by one.
Matte lamination
Flattens glare and hides fingerprints. Suits supplements, food and any carton that wants a quiet surface; the usual ground for spot UV.
Gloss lamination
Deepens color and reflects light. Suits bright color cosmetics, toys and saturated artwork.
Soft-touch lamination
A velvet hand that reads as expensive before the print is noticed. The standard for beauty, candles and gifting; the strongest ground for foil.
Foil stamping
A heated die presses metallic or pigmented foil into the board: gold, silver, copper, rose gold, black, holographic. A mirror-bright mark for logos.
Embossing
A die raises a shape from the surface so the hand reads it at once. Used blind, in register with print, or under foil.
Debossing
The shape is pressed into the board. Quieter than an emboss; deepest on kraft, leatherette and thick rigid box wraps.
Spot UV
Clear varnish cured under ultraviolet light on selected areas, so a logo or pattern shines against a matte ground. Raised spot UV stands proud of the surface.
Specialty papers
Linen, laid, felt-marked, metallic, pearlescent and leatherette wraps that carry texture instead of a coating, for rigid boxes and sleeves.
Window patching
A die-cut aperture with clear film behind it, in any shape, so the product shows without opening the box. Bakery, soap, cosmetic and retail cartons.
Finishing questions
Before you ask.
Anything not covered here, put it in the notes on your quote and we will answer it directly.
Ask on your quoteIs lamination included?
Yes. Lamination is included on every order; the type is chosen for the product and confirmed on your quote.
Which finish is best for a logo?
Foil on a matte or soft-touch ground is the strongest single mark. A blind emboss or deboss is quieter and needs no ink. Spot UV suits a tone-on-tone logo.
Can finishes be combined?
Yes. Foil over an emboss, spot UV over matte lamination and a deboss on a specialty wrap are common pairings. Each is a separate layer on the dieline.
Do finishes change the lead time?
No. Production is approximately 10–12 working days from proof approval and payment, plus 3–5 working days ground shipping. Delivery is free on every order, and the minimum order is 50 boxes.
