A metal die presses the board from behind to raise a shape (emboss) or from the front to recess it (deboss). Used blind, in register with print, or combined with foil, on cartons, rigid box wraps and sleeves.

What embossing is
A die, a counter-die and the board between them.
Embossing presses the board between a female die and a male counter-die so the shape rises from the surface. Debossing does the reverse — the shape is pressed into the board. Both leave a relief the hand reads immediately, and both work without any ink at all: a blind emboss of a logo on an unprinted or single-color box is one of the quietest, most confident finishes in packaging.
In register with print, the relief lifts the artwork underneath it; combined with foil, it gives a raised metallic mark. Depth depends on the board — thicker, softer stocks and rigid box wraps take a deeper impression than thin coated board.

Can you emboss without ink?
