Rigid boxes — collapsible magnetic

Custom Collapsible Rigid Boxes

A collapsible rigid box is a magnetic-closure box engineered to arrive flat and take its shape at the packing table. It gives the weight and hard edges of wrapped greyboard without the storage and freight of an assembled box, which is why subscription kits, e-commerce gifting and larger presentation boxes specify it.

Construction

How it is built, and how it opens.

  • How it is built

The base is a single wrapped assembly of greyboard panels joined by the wrap paper rather than by fixed glued corners. The side and end walls are hinged to the floor, and the corners are joined by folded wrap gussets or by magnets set into the walls. The lid is hinged to the back wall as on a fixed magnetic box, with a front flap carrying the closing magnets. Wrapped flat, the box lies in a stack a fraction of the height of assembled boxes.

  • How it snaps into shape

At packing, the walls are lifted from the floor and the corners lock: gusseted corners fold inward and are held by magnets or by the tension of the wrap, and the box squares itself. It stands as stiff as a fixed rigid box, because the same gauge of greyboard is doing the work. Assembly takes seconds per box, and a short instruction card is supplied with the first order.

  • Board and wrap

Greyboard from 1.5 mm to 3 mm, chosen for the size of the box and the weight of its contents. The wrap is full-color printed art paper or a textured, linen, kraft or leatherette paper; because the wrap forms the hinges, a paper with some tear resistance is preferred on larger boxes. Foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV are applied before lamination, which is included. The inner liner can be printed for a color field on opening.

  • Packing, shipping and cost

This is the rigid construction that ships and stores best: flat, stacked, easy to hold as stock. Per unit it costs a little more than a fixed magnetic box of the same size, because there are more magnets and more wrap work in the corners; the saving comes in freight and warehouse space and grows with the size of the box. For small boxes the fixed construction is usually the better buy.

What it suits

Where a collapsible rigid box earns its place.

  • Subscription kits

A box stored flat and assembled monthly at the packing table, with a board insert for the month's items.

  • E-commerce gifting

A rigid presentation box that travels inside a courier carton without the freight of a pre-assembled box.

  • Apparel and footwear

Larger boxes for garments and shoes, where assembled rigid boxes would take too much space.

  • Corporate gifts and hampers

Seasonal orders that must be held as stock and packed in a short window.

  • Electronics kits

A device, accessories and printed material in a foam or board cradle inside a stiff, square box.

Send it on the quote form
  • Internal dimensions (L × W × D) or the product itself, and the weight of the contents. Every box is made to your dimensions.
  • Corner style: folded wrap gussets or magnetic corners.
  • Wrap paper and inner liner, printed or plain, and finishes: foil stamping, embossing, spot UV, lamination.

Collapsible Rigid questions

Before you ask.

Anything not covered here, put it in the notes on your quote and we will answer it directly.

Ask on your quote

What is a collapsible rigid box?

A magnetic-closure rigid box whose walls are hinged to the floor by the wrap so it ships flat and is folded into shape at packing. It is as stiff as a fixed box once assembled.

Is a collapsible box as strong as a fixed rigid box?

Once squared, yes. The greyboard gauge is the same; the corners are locked by gussets or magnets rather than glued during manufacture.

How long does it take to assemble one?

Seconds. The walls lift, the corners fold in and hold, and the lid closes on its magnets. An instruction card is supplied with the first order.

What is the minimum order for custom collapsible rigid boxes?

The minimum order for custom collapsible rigid boxes is 50 boxes, the same as every structure we make. Your quote shows the price at each quantity you ask for.

How long does production take?

Standard production is 10–12 working days from proof approval and payment. Ground shipping adds 3–5 working days, and delivery is free on every order.

Can I get a sample before the full run?

Standalone samples are chargeable, because making one box or a handful takes the same setup and production steps as a full run. On a qualifying bulk order, once the order is placed we produce a pre-production sample for your approval at no extra sample charge, and the remaining quantity runs after you approve it.
