Mailer boxes vs folding cartons: shelf packaging and courier packaging are different jobs
A mailer is built to travel; a folding carton is built for the shelf. Many brands need both. Here is how they differ and how to combine them.

Brands that sell both in stores and online often ask for one box that does both jobs. It rarely exists. A folding carton is designed to sit on a shelf and be protected by it; a mailer box is designed to survive a parcel network on its own. Understanding the difference saves a lot of damaged product.
The folding carton
Paperboard, printed directly, shipped flat, folded at packing. It carries the brand, the product information and the shelf presence, and it costs the least at volume. What it does not do is travel alone: a carton dropped into a parcel network without an outer arrives dented.
The mailer box
Corrugated — usually E-flute — with a self-locking roll-end tuck-top structure that closes without tape. Made to the product so nothing rattles, printed outside and, ideally, inside. It takes courier handling on its own and delivers an unboxing rather than a delivery.
Side by side
| Folding carton | Mailer box | |
|---|---|---|
| Board | Paperboard, solid | Corrugated, fluted |
| Closure | Tuck flaps or glued base | Self-locking, no tape |
| Outside; inside sometimes | Outside and inside | |
| Travels alone | No | Yes |
| Best for | Retail shelf | Direct to customer |
| Cost | Lower at volume | Higher per unit, but replaces an outer and void fill |
Using both
The efficient pattern for an omnichannel brand is a carton for the shelf and a mailer sized to hold that carton — or the product directly — for online orders. The mailer's interior print does the unboxing; the carton inside is the same one the customer would have bought in store. For online-only brands, skip the carton: a mailer with an insert is the product packaging.
A note on terminology
A custom mailer box is branded product packaging made to your product. It is not a commodity shipping carton, and it is not what we mean when we say we do not supply shipping supplies. The difference is design: a mailer is specified from the product outward; a shipping carton is a stock size the product is put into.

Ask on your quoteCan a folding carton be sent in the post on its own?
Not reliably. Paperboard dents and corners crush in a parcel network. Put it in a mailer or an outer.
Is a mailer box more expensive than a carton?
Per unit, usually — but it replaces the outer box and void fill a carton would need to travel, so the total is often lower.
Can I print inside a folding carton too?
Yes. Inside print is available on cartons; it is standard on mailers because the inside is what the customer sees first.
